General Medicine
This branch of medicine deals with prevention, diagnosis of diseases, and non-surgical treatment. This branch is also called internal medicine. It deals with different diseases involving the whole body, like asthma, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. General Medicine physicians indulge in diagnosing and treating all disorders and refer them to specialists’ doctors. They are trained to manage multisystem or complex disease conditions that single organ specialist doctors cannot handle. They manage severe acute illnesses involving multiple organs and multiple diseases in a single patient. They also provide inpatient care for all specialties. They focus on adults and do not include paediatrics, obstetrics, or surgery. Immunisations, health counselling, and the physical examination of sportsmen all fall under general medicine. Both chronic and acute diseases can be treated in general medicine. These include fever, asthma, hypertension, thyroid issues, liver diseases, and heart diseases. Apart from these high lipids, headaches, coughs, colds, flu, pneumonia, anxiety, and other diseases are covered and treated under general medicine. It provides comprehensive care for people with different symptoms. In the general exam, you will be examined for blood tests, ECG, high blood pressure, BMI, alcohol use, hepatitis C, depression, type 2 diabetes, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer. General medicine physicians conduct a full-body physical examination and blood pressure checks. They communicate with the patients suffering from chronic diseases about ongoing care and treatment. Depending on the illness and treatment required, they recommend specialists. They follow up with the patients undergoing surgery and help with postoperative recovery.
A full-body physical examination includes examining for any anomalies or unusual growth. They check for size, location, tenderness, and consistency of internal organs like the kidneys, lungs, heart, and liver. Auscultation of heart sounds, lungs for wheezing, and stomach. Examining for any fluid retention. Pap smear in women and other tests depending on health status. Data can be gathered from the past medical history, social history, and family history of the patient. Including past laboratory examinations, clinical findings, and imaging. Once the findings are analysed, the diagnosis and possible referrals are made.
After a physical examination, a general medicine physician will inform you of the results and prescribe medicine and lifestyle changes depending on the situation. Treatment modalities include both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods, depending on the diagnosis. Follow-up with patients and continuity of care are part of general medicine.
